The event here was a great success. App 100 people showed up, and I did an introduction before the panel that gave overview of the legislation and read the statement you sent. Jacob, the editor of "Precious Knowledge" (the documentary on HR 2281) is based here and he attended too and we invited him to speak after the panel (briefly) about his project and it was great. Well, in the manner of such institutions, our UU fellowship did finally adopt a position supporting ethnic studies week last week. We are having an adult studies course on this topic and immigration issues starting in January. Better late than never. Some wheels take an awful lot of grease! Thank you for all your work in coordinating this effort. It has been great watching as the movement has grown. Public sharing of ideas and concerns has developed, even in small communities such as Port Townsend--who's athletic teams are called the "Redskins" with a Sioux warrior as the mascot. This in the midst of 6 NW Coastal tribal groups within 50 mile radius of the city. Our local "ethnic studies" will include awareness of the impact of racism in our community in relation to the First Nations. Thanks again for your leadership...Barbara Long Beach CSULB, event photos 10/06/2010

I have to say the event was inspirational. the first night we had about 400 turn up. we had about 200 for the 9 am talk by the Tucson teachers. They absolutely brought the house down. The rest of the day went well with most workshops very well attended. Lots of community college folks, students, and community members. We are happy today! Lynet Uttal, Madison Wisconsin 10/02/2010
Under the leadership of Sandra Magaña, director of Chican@ and Latin@ Studies Program, and Timothy Yu, Professor of Asian American StudiesProgram, the Ethnic Studies Programs at UW-Madison have created anamazing consortium of Ethnic Studies scholars to create our EthnicStudies Week of educational and creative events to educate, remind, protest, and remember why Ethnic Studies is an important part of our elementary, middle school, high school and college curricula andhow this knowledge became included as a formal part of education. The collaborative energy that is happening at UW-Madison is invigorating and empowering. We hope to re-affirm and educate the campus broadly about the importance of Ethnic Studies. >Please see our events at: http://polyglot.lss.wisc.edu/aasp/event/Ethnic%20Studies/EthnicStudiesWeek.html South High School students kicked-off Ethnic Studies week with an auditorium that included Lisa Sass-Zaragoza from the Chicano/a Studies Department of the U of MN and Brandon Royce-Diop, an Education student at St. Thomas University. In class, my students also watched a video about the ... struggle for Ethnic Studies at U...C Berkeley, and followed with a very thoughtful discussion. Victor Rodriguez, Long Beach 10/01/2010
We got provost support, publicity is going very well, this will be a success in Long Beach. With a shoestring budget but lots of passion. Emily Drew, Salem Oregon Willamette College 10/01/2010
Our kick off event today was wonderful, and all of our faculty's doors are taped with "Banned Red Tape." Students are banning their doors and bodies starting Monday, |
