App 100 people showed up, and I did an introduction before the panel that gave overview of the legislation and read the statement you sent. Jacob, the editor of "Precious Knowledge" (the documentary on HR 2281) is based here and he attended too and we invited him to speak after the panel (briefly) about his project and it was great. ]]><![CDATA[Portownsend WA ]]>Tue, 12 Oct 2010 05:35:10 -0800http://ethnicstudiesweekoctober1-7.org/8/post/2010/10/portownsend-wa.htmlWell, in the manner of such institutions, our UU fellowship did finally adopt a position supporting ethnic studies week last week. We are having an adult studies course on this topic and immigration issues starting in January. Better late than never. Some wheels take an awful lot of grease! Thank you for all your work in coordinating this effort. It has been great watching as the movement has grown. Public sharing of ideas and concerns has developed, even in small communities such as Port Townsend--who's athletic teams are called the "Redskins" with a Sioux warrior as the mascot. This in the midst of 6 NW Coastal tribal groups within 50 mile radius of the city. Our local "ethnic studies" will include awareness of the impact of racism in our community in relation to the First Nations. Thanks again for your leadership...Barbara ]]><![CDATA[Long Beach CSULB, event photos ]]>Wed, 06 Oct 2010 11:36:04 -0800http://ethnicstudiesweekoctober1-7.org/8/post/2010/10/long-beach-csulb-event-photos.html

<![CDATA[Jose Lara, et al, Los Angeles ]]>Sun, 03 Oct 2010 06:25:17 -0800http://ethnicstudiesweekoctober1-7.org/8/post/2010/10/jose-lara-et-al-los-angeles.htmlJose del Barrio Had a great time learn and sharing with Arizona Ethnic Studies Teachers tonight! I think we need to push for a Ethnic studies department in LAUSD!!! Como Ven?

    • Nati Carrera: Yes! If anything what the people in the Arizona Ethnic Studies Program should inspire us to do is not only fight back but push forward. All those students were so much more conscious and critical because of their participation in the ethnic... studies program. A way to academically engage students so that they read better, write better and even do better on math!?! Yes, please! Plus, they are more likely to go to college! You want an anti-gang program, an anti-drop out program and something to get students on track for higher education, then ethnic studies is where it's at. We should be promoting programs like this for our youth all over the place.
    • Miguel M.Chavez: Very powerful event! It was empowering to see how Tucson teachers have incorporated indigenismo into their curriculum and classroom practice. Thanks for an awesome evening!

They absolutely brought the house down. The rest of the day went well with most workshops very well attended. Lots of community college folks, students, and community members. elementary, middle school, high school and college curricula
and
how this knowledge became included as a formal part of education. The collaborative energy that is happening at UW-Madison is invigorating and empowering. We hope to re-affirm and educate the campus broadly about the importance of Ethnic Studies.
